Our biggest Sunday of the year came out of our thinnest fortnight. This is what the day means, what we brought to it, and what God did with it.
Scripture does not say that God is like a father. It says every family that has ever existed is named after him. Human fatherhood is the copy; his is the original. So when we honour dads, we are tracing a line back to the one they were made to resemble.
Not everyone has a father worth thanking, and not everyone still has one to thank. A day founded on God’s fatherhood can carry all of that: thanksgiving for good fathers, room to grieve absent or wounding ones, and a Father who never fails either kind of child.
The heart of the good news is not a transaction but an adoption: through Christ, outsiders are called children of God. Father’s Day is one of the few Sundays in the year when the whole community is already thinking about fathers — and on that day we get to introduce them to the Father.
“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.”
The fortnight before Father’s Day took people out of every part of the service — the front, the desk, the door and the pews.
The three big Sundays of 2026 2026年三个大主日
Attendance at the 9:15am service, both congregations combined. The dashed extension shows where Father’s Day would have landed had the 22 absent regulars been present.
Who made up the 79 这79人由谁组成
Each bar is one congregation, on the same scale, split by how often that person normally comes.
Ten visitors — nine English-speaking, one Chinese-speaking — the most we have welcomed on any Sunday this year.
Twenty-one irregular attenders came, people who normally manage less than one Sunday a month. That number is extraordinary, and it is the number to keep praying over.
Forty-eight regulars still came, 25 English-speaking and 23 Chinese-speaking — strong, though well below a usual Sunday.
We had the least to work with, and God gave us the most.
“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
The arithmetic does not explain the day. Fewer leaders, newer operators, a thinner roster and a grieving fortnight should have produced a smaller Sunday, not our largest. What we can say plainly is that the growth was given, not engineered.
The other thing worth naming is the unity. With fewer hands on the roster, more people simply carried one another — covering the door, filling gaps, and making room for guests. That was the most inspiring part of the morning, and it is worth thanking each person for by name.
This is the church we are asking God for every Sunday, not only on the big ones.
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.”
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.”
